An early 20th century naturalistic spelter sculpture of il Porcellino (Italian “piglet”) by Liberty after the Florentine bronze fountain of a boar. The spelter boar retains a good patina and is mounted on a shaped leather base. The underside is marked: 
Made in Italy for Liberty.

The original bronze boar fountain figure was sculpted and cast by Pietro Tacca (1577-1640) in 1634. Il Porcellino was originally removed from Rome and taken to Florence by the Medici. The bronze boar is associated with the Calydonian Boar of Greek mythology. The Florentine nickname for the bronze boar is il Porcellino which is piglet in Italian.
