John Collard Vickery was born in 1856 in Wiveliscombe in Somerset. In 1890 JCV and his then business partner Arthur Thomas Hobbs bought the long established business of William Griggs, a bookseller and stationer at 183 Regent Street. Continuing alone from 1891, he established himself as a jeweller, silversmith and maker of leather goods. The firm J.C. Vickery traded from 179, 181 and 183 Regent Street from 1902 until 1914, when it expanded to additional Regent Street addresses. J.C. Vickery reached the height of its success just before the First World War and the firm held the Royal Warrant from King Edward VII. The business was acquired by James Walker Ltd in the 1930s.
