RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Adriatic was a British ocean liner of the White Star Line. She was the fourth of a quartet of ships dubbed the “Big Four.” Out of the four ships she was the largest, fastest and the most luxurious. RMS Adriatic was also the first ocean liner to have an indoor swimming pool and a Victorian style Turkish bath. She began her career on the route from the UK to New York in 1911. On the outbreak of the First World War she continued her civilian transatlantic service until 1917, when she was then requisitioned by the War Office and served as a troop ship. On the 26th January 1918 while docked at Pier 60 in New York, a fire broke out on her deck due to barrels of oil catching fire. After the war she was fully refurbished and modernised and was gradually used for cruises. During the early 1930s her main service was as a cruiser. When Cunard Line and White Star Line merged in 1934 she was sold off as bigger and better ships were being made. She left Liverpool for the last time on the 19th December 1934 which was her longest voyage. In 1935 RMS Adriatic was scrapped in Osaka in Japan.
